Pilates classes in Paisley

At Above and Beyond Yoga in Paisley, we also offer Pilates classes suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience. Pilates is a low-impact exercise method that improves balance, coordination, flexibility and, over time, strengthens your core for better stability. A strong core supports good posture and can help reduce or prevent back pain, particularly when there is weakness in the upper or lower back.

In addition to the physical benefits, Pilates focuses on deep diaphragmatic breathing. This type of breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to reduce stress and anxiety and leaving you feeling calmer and more energised.

Classical vs Contemporary Pilates

We offer two main approaches to Pilates:

  • Classical Pilates – This follows the original sequence and exercises created by Joseph Pilates, often referred to as the 34 original matwork exercises. Movements are taught in a flowing order, with a strong focus on precision, breath and control.

  • Contemporary Pilates – This adapts Joseph Pilates’ work for the modern body, sometimes modifying positions to make them more accessible or to incorporate current knowledge of anatomy and movement. Props such as resistance bands, balls and circles are often used to add variety or support.

Both Classical and Contemporary Pilates uphold the six main principles of an effective Pilates practice:

  1. Concentration – bringing full awareness to each movement.

  2. Control – performing exercises with intention and accuracy.

  3. Centering – activating the body’s powerhouse (core muscles).

  4. Flow – creating smooth, graceful transitions between movements.

  5. Precision – focusing on correct alignment and form.

  6. Breathing – coordinating breath with movement to enhance performance and relaxation.
